Some of the best tourist options are very close to home. I had the pleasure this summer of visiting the area around the 1000 Islands and including a stop at Boldt Castle. A bit of a sad story here, per Google:
Boldt Castle, located on Heart Island in New York’s Thousand Islands, was commissioned in 1900 by millionaire hotel magnate George C. Boldt as a grand, 120-room summer estate and a monument of love for his wife, Louise. However, construction ceased abruptly in January 1904 when Louise died suddenly, prompting a heartbroken Boldt to abandon the nearly completed Rhineland-style castle forever. Left to the elements and vandals for 73 years, the property was finally rescued in 1977 by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority, which acquired the estate for one dollar and has since used visitor revenues to successfully restore and preserve it as a major international tourist landmark.
